Color Equation

The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky was able to fulfill waves of different colors and geometrical shapes through the sounds that sprang from an orchestra. This is how he painted some of his most important artworks, Composition VII (1913) among them, which he painted after listening to a symphony while in Germany. Sound can also be observed in all its magnitude when talking about British artist David Hockney. He is capable of blending two of humanity’s five senses while painting landscapes in colors whose inspiration come from nature’s own sounds. This close bond among different sensorial experiences is called synesthesia. Scotsman Daniel Mullen, however, didn’t experience it until he underwent his own synesthetic reality; the result is his most recent artwork series named Synesthisia, which is now being exhibited in a solo show at Emmathomas Gallery, in Brazil.

His paintings, most of which employ acrylic paint, are formed by dozens of layers which together offer a portrayal of a common sensation to those who possess the unique ability to observe the colors of time, or to perceive time in color. This series began when American artist-filmmaker Lucy Cordes Engelman, upon seeing Daniel’s previous work, decided to approach him, believing that even if he did not have synesthesia himself, he might be able to translate the experience through his work. “I unfold time codes, thus encountering the colors of each number throughout Lucy’s eyes”, Mullen explains. They are now married. She collaborates in the series creation, by aiding him to define chromatic combinations that follow the lines the artist draws on his canvases.

The creative process begins by the couple’s choice of a specific date. Each mathematical fraction that is part of the date triggers in Lucy’s brain a determined shade. “Number two, for instance, represents yellow to her”, explains Mullen. Such prospects, plus the optical illusion that occur between the combination of pigmentation and geometry, go back to the kinetic movement in the 50’s, in Paris.

Mullen’s earlier series derive from his childhood passion for architecture and space construction. His true fascination is to create environments and empty them right after, thus turning everything scale-free. Le Corbusier and Zaha Hadid are among the architects he relies on. Synesthisia, however, maintains an inherited perspective that place colors as the outset to project given spaces and directions. “My painting is the doorway for an observer to go deep into a sensorial experience. I want it to be a place of reflection.”

Son to a hobbyist painter and kindergarten teacher, Mullen was born and raised in Glasgow. He attended Waldorf education-based schools which he credits for his creative resourcefulness that led him to pursue a career as a painter. He graduated in Fine Art in 2011 from Gerrit Rietveld Academy and has since, exhibited his work in London, New York, Vancouver, Berlin and currently in São Paulo. “Time and color are the two necessary variables to unravel the equation.”

Lives and works in Amsterdam

Abstract painter Daniel Mullen was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1985. Graduated in 2011 from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, where he currently resides. Mullen has had his works exhibited in London, Vancouver, New York, and more recently, held his first exhibition at the Direktorenhaus Museum in Berlin. Mullen’s artistic career started as a natural passion he exerts for architecture and spaces; what fascinates him is to create spaces, unoccupying them thereafter. He creates perspectives, toying with optical illusions, which come to place by combining pigmentation and geometry.
