Tangerina Bruno: Everyday States

In The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, Sigmund Freud’s most widely translated work, the psychoanalyst addresses the way the unconscious is expressed in our daily lives through ordinary feelings, like fear, discomfort, surprise and attention. He aims to illustrate that psychoanalysis is not limited to studying abnormality, but rather engaging in the description and understanding of the human mind as well as the transformation we experience physically even through that which we only feel. The everyday situations precisely outlined as film frames in the paintings of duo Tangerina Bruno highlight these ordinary feelings, which are no less relevant to the human psyche.

These instants are captured by 26-year-old twins Cirillo and Leticia Tangerina Bruno, portraying the moment of action of the figure that inhabits the canvas. Yes, they’re frozen, but they’re also moving. They iron clothes, scream from a chair, shower, sew. Vibrations from the characters’ gestures can be perceived not only in the scene itself but also in closer examination of the micronarratives that lie in the details happening all over the canvas, painted on an undone bedspread or a piece of furniture in the room. The realistic scenes portrayed in vibrant colors take us back to the paintings of David Hockney, Alex Katz, Alfred Leslie and even Edward Hopper. Such scenes get their epilogues from spot-on titles that play on popular proverbs, insinuating a certain humor and irony through our acknowledgement (and disdain) of the emotions depicted.

Each work takes months or even years of effort from the minds and wrists of the duo born in the town of Porto Ferreira in São Paulo state. Approaching the canvas simultaneously or alternately, depending on the occasion, they empower their own history in an intoxicating combination of roles and talents. While Leticia brings the precision of hyperrealism in portraits and self-portraits of the duo, Cirillo creates patterns that resonate and attest to the central ideas of the works. The endeavor requires the artists’ combined four hands and two minds which turn into a third, living element, sparking new ideas, producing, painting and recounting the experiences lived by the duo.
