Color Bind

Marcello Dantas

There are many ways through which artworks can be combined. Curating is often a subjective process of establishing connections between different things based on a particular perspective, albeit one that reveals something intangible. I believe curating is also a game in which rules are established. And we should let the waves break to analyze the froth, as this froth results from the artworks’ latent friction.

Há coisas entre nós que não dizemos em voz alta

Bruno Passos

“What a beautiful picture! It looks just like a photograph…” These words of praise are often part of viewers conversations in museums and exhibitions. The naïf perspective is an easy target in the aesthetics realm. Although honest and true for the person who shares it, this idea – which approaches art upon its resemblance to “reality” – is, itself, the death of art. Brought down to the function of mimesis, strictly speaking, artistic representation would be relegated to a lesser role, since now, more than ever before, it could be substituted for quality digital photo retouching resources through softwares that make image even closer to reality (or to whatever reality is assumed to be).

Transes, rituais e substâncias

Carlos Mélo

Having been in a pandemic for over a year, we live in a state of constant oscillation, swinging between uncertainty and self-care in the face so many new fixed rules of social distancing, mobility limitation and such a long time spent at home. Our reality awareness and of other people and ourselves have been profoundly changed by insecurity: the way we walk, smell, work, sleep, learn, love, get informed, look at artworks, read something, taste food, touch somebody’s skin. Our senses have been guided by instability.

Amômetro

Patricia Carparelli

According to German poet Friedrich Schiller in his “Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man”, the true artist can give form to nature, placing it at his disposal – as he separates matter from form, its exterior may even attract it. However, the true artist “plays” with matter, elevating its existence while keeping it alongside Beauty.

A Beautiful Image

Bruno Miguel

Words or images are always a taunt. The unconscious never ceases to self-inscribe: what’s fabled and imagined emerge at every leap taken by the individual. Conversely, reality doesn’t allow itself to be inscribed – it sneaks out, escapes and comes about in the world. It’s conspicuous in material life, turning up as a perceived phenomenon. Among the tokens employed by Bruno Miguel in his paintings and the abundance of color, paint and objects on the surface of his canvases...

Ephemeral Fields

Daniel Mullen

“Field connotes a body or a realm, and ephemeral means a fleeting, transitory or a brief moment in time”, explains abstract painter Daniel Mullen, known for his play with geometrical optical illusion, spatial perspective and light, to refer to the multiple horizons in his present paintings. The body of work for the solo exhibition “Ephemeral Fields” by the Glasgow-born artist stems from the question “in what way might we imagine a future monument or the idea of a monument”.

Rebento

Mirela Cabral

For the artist to make it to this point, her first solo show, a lot of water had to flow under the bridge, which is admirable considering her young age. Prior to working in fine arts, Mirela Cabral had a stint as a filmmaker, four years of college here in Brazil, a year studying abroad, plus a year working on screenwriting – getting acquainted with the meanders of a thorny industry in which decisions are made in inaccessible realms, rendering such concepts as control and authorship chimerical. But this might not matter much. To paraphrase Joseph Brodsky on artists, just like with birds, biographical data matter less than the uniqueness of their singing, though they carry this (diluted) data in their core. In calendar time, her work established itself quickly, which came as a surprise, even to her.

Ut machina corpus

Marcia Pastore

In the 1949 anti-epic poem “A máquina do mundo” [The Machine of the World] by Carlos Drummond de Andrade (*), the renowned Brazilian poet reveals the mechanism of the world while the individual remains an enigma. Like Drummond, the installation Peso-contrapeso [Weight-Counterweight] by São Paulo-born conceptual artist Marcia Pastore thrives in the Hellenic and Renaissance theory that the world is a machine. Weight-Counterweight lays bare a complex and perplexing mechanism created to perform an overwhelming play of tension by drawing lines with steel cables in the void architectural space, which is one of Pastore’s recurring issues along with experiments in civil engineering.
