Emmathomas Gallery presents the exhibition Duas SpherogrÁfias, by Gilberto Salvador

The artist uses the sphere as an instrument to create interventions in panels with excerpts from Spanish poems by Federico Garcia Lorca

Between May 30th and July 14th, Emmathomas Gallery opens its doors to the first individual exhibition of 2018: Duas SpherogrÁfias, by Gilberto Salvador, curated by Ricardo Resende. The exhibition brings together 17 works made using techniques that reflect the poetic thinking of the artist, recognized by the diversity of supports and dimensions in two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects, which offer the public multiple interpretations.

Inspired by the poems of the Spanish artist Federico Garcia Lorca, twelve of the works that make up the exhibition are panels with fragments taken from the writer’s poems. With effects caused by the release of spheres covered by black ink, this unprecedented cut makes a dip between two artistic languages: the human body and literature.

“The artist of a single work.” It is the artist’s own words to look at what he has produced over more than 50 years of his career. “He created without strings, exercising consistently the freedom to dream, think and visualize movement, colors and shapes. His imaginary plastic is inspired by nature, in the organic forms that make up the world. His creative process does not change. It does not matter if it is in the painting, if it is in the sculpture, if it is in the engraving. In all languages, it is the same way. Neither sculptor nor painter. The hybrid is the artist, “says curator Ricardo Resende.

In these more than 50 years of trajectory, Gilberto Salvador has always worked with spherical forms. Presented in a mystical way, they also reveal a certain symbolism and playful aspects – themes frequently addressed in the works of the artist, who in this production used tennis balls as an instrument of painting.

With an extensive three-dimensional repertoire, especially in regard to works in public spaces, Gilberto Salvador inserts a large red sphere in the center of the gallery. In an invasive and uncomfortable way, the sculpture allows the public to interact – which will surround it to contemplate its three meters in diameter.

According to the artist, in Duas SpherogrÁfias, the sphere conveys a romantic vision. “I divided exposure by segments: in the unpublished and two-dimensional cut, the sphere is used almost instrumentally; in the second, the use of the sphere occurs as an interactive and questioning agent to the public, representing its meaning in the most evident way. Finally, objects that rotate on the wall change the spheres of position and cause sounds. This movement creates activity and passivity, that is, the androgyny of the sphere, “he explains.
