Lives and works in São Paulo

Francisco Rodrigues, better known as Nunca (Never), is among the most famous masters of Brazilian street art: his work, which can be found in cities all over the world, earned a reputation when the Tate Modern put on a major exhibition of global street art in 2008, covering the museum´s exterior walls with works around 15 metres high.

He started making graffiti and pichação (a uniquely Brazilian form of tagging) on the streets of São Paulo when he was 12 years old. Over the decades, his work developed into a more pictorial form. Though made with acrylic or spray paint, it often has the look of woodcuts or etchings, using colours and styles to evoke the anciet traditions of the Brazilian people and the clash between tribal roots and globalized society.
